Our installation design was inspired by the fruit cart—and its quintessential rainbow umbrella—as a symbol of community, resilience, pride, and delicious food. We fixated on the power of the fruit cart as an iconic symbol of CicLAvia’s love for the street. After all, what’s more LA than a fruit cart?⠀
The abstracted fruit carts were constructed from upcycled wood palettes and, like all things CicLAvia, were meant to move freely around the ‘LA’ pillars at the center of the installation. Our design functioned as the monument to Los Angeles at the geographic center of CicLAvia’s open streets on 10/10/21, it was the backdrop to Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti’s pre-event press speech, and was a visual history highlighting the neighborhoods in which CicLAvia has created safer streets over the years.
Thank you again to CicLAvia, Place and Page, Francisco Palomares, RIOS, and all the collaborators that helped us design, construct, and realize this project.
